Stepping into Fireroom at Mall of Africa was like entering a world where every detail is designed to captivate. The space is vast, with a modern yet inviting ambiance that’s alive with energy. From the LED lights on the ceiling and stairs to the marble accents and lush greenery, the décor creates a perfect blend of elegance and warmth.
As we arrived, smiles greeted us at the door, setting the tone for a memorable afternoon.

The atmosphere at Fireroom was vibrant, with the restaurant bustling at 2 PM on a Saturday. Despite the crowd, the mood was relaxed, filled with the hum of conversations and the gentle notes of background music—not your typical elevator tunes, but something livelier that added to the charm. The standout design elements—marble stairs, chic bars, and a stunning firepit—created a sense of luxury that made the experience even more special.
Our server, Zama, was a gem. She brought a friendly and efficient energy to our table, guiding us through the menu with expertise. For drinks, Zama recommended a Japanese Gin for my friend—Ki No Bi, with notes of citrus, tea, herbs, and spices—and paired it with tonic for a refreshing twist. I opted for an alcohol-free option, Abstinence Cape Floral, with pink tonic. The presentation was an experience in itself, with glasses decorated with fruits and flowers, and dry ice creating a smoky spectacle as the tonic was poured.

For starters, we couldn’t resist the “Sushi on Fire” dish, a unique offering at Fireroom. The Sushi Braai, a rainbow roll with prawn, salmon, tuna, peppadew, and avo, came with a port and sesame seed reduction. Zama lit the sauce on fire at the table, creating a theatrical and delicious start to our meal. The heat from the flame was intense, and the flavour was just as bold. The sushi was fresh, with a delightful tang from the reduction, making every bite a treat.
For our main course, we decided to share two dishes. The first was the Tekkadon Salmon Pokè Bowl, a beautifully layered dish with cubed salmon sashimi, sushi rice, avo, seaweed, and sesame seeds, all drizzled with a honey soya dressing. The presentation was stunning, with the ingredients stacked like a little bungalow, and the flavours were a perfect harmony of fresh and savoury. The salmon was tender, and the honey soya sauce added a delightful sweetness that made the dish irresistible.

Our second main was the Kingklip Thermidor. This dish featured grilled kingklip with shrimps, mushrooms, and a blend of cheddar and mozzarella, baked to perfection with a side of veggies. The fish was flaky and flavourful, complemented by the cheesy topping that added a creamy richness. The vegetables were fresh, and the sticky rice was a perfect accompaniment, though we were too full to finish it all.
No meal is complete without dessert, and we chose the Bar-One Sliders—a tempura-crusted Bar-One nugget served with caramel and strawberry sorbet. The warm, gooey chocolate inside the crispy tempura paired with the cold, tangy sorbet created a sensational contrast. Each bite was a delightful mix of textures and flavours, a sweet ending to a fantastic meal.

The presentation of each dish at Fireroom was impeccable. The sushi was served on a long plate with wasabi shaped like a rose, and eco-friendly chopsticks were a thoughtful touch. The Pokè Bowl was artfully arranged with the honey soya dressing creating a beautiful pattern, and the Kingklip dish featured a rose-shaped pumpkin atop the veggies, adding a lovely visual element.

Fireroom’s menu is diverse, offering everything from sushi and fish to poultry, meats, and poke bowls. Each dish we tried was a masterpiece in flavour and presentation, and I left with a list of dishes I’m eager to try on my next visit—particularly their signature sushi options, chicken dishes, and the intriguing Inside Out Cheesecake.
This restaurant exudes a sophisticated vibe, making it perfect for adults looking for a fine dining experience. While there were families with kids, the setting is more suited for groups of adults. The dress code matched the upscale ambiance, with everyone looking their best to enjoy a special meal.

Would I recommend Fireroom?
