Altra Gracia: Where good vibes & flavour collide

From the moment I got the invite from Alta Gracia, I knew this night was going to be something special. Being based in Pretoria, I’m not as clued-up on the Johannesburg food scene, but the moment the message landed in my inbox, it was an instant yes. I grabbed one of my besties, and off we went for a night out in Beyers Park.

Walking into Alta Gracia is like stepping into a moody, sophisticated lounge tucked away in the city. You ascend a set of stairs, greeted by their glowing AG logo, and from there the aesthetic takes over—dark printed walls, dramatic black curtains, abstract ceiling lights, and deep velvet couches that practically begged us to sit. Though there was cozy seating outside under fairy lights and heaters, it was a chilly evening, so we opted to stay indoors.

What made the evening even more exciting was the mystery menu. Our waiter, Bhekumuzi, let us know they’d be surprising us with a three-course meal and drinks. I mentioned I’m pescatarian—no red meat—and he made sure everything fit perfectly.

We kicked things off with round one of mocktails since Alta Gracia is alcohol-free. I went with a Strawberry Mojito and my friend had the Blueberry Mojito. Both came in funky glasses, sugar-rimmed and topped with fresh fruit—almost too pretty to drink… almost.

Then came the starter, the Forage Platter. A dreamy combo of corn ribs, mushroom poppers, halloumi strips, and tikka wings. My friend isn’t a mushroom fan, but even she was impressed. The halloumi had the perfect melt, the wings were flavour bombs, and the corn ribs? My first time trying them—and definitely not the last.

Our second drink round followed—this time the Sunrise and Sunset duo. Both mocktails were equally refreshing, and the slushy mango topping added the perfect chill.

Next up was the first main: The Tidal Feast. This seafood platter came loaded with four large prawns, hake fillet, fried calamari (both heads and tubes), savoury rice, and crispy chips. Everything was cooked to perfection—the prawns were juicy, the calamari had the perfect bite, and the hake? Melted with each forkful.

The second main, The Arancia, was a standout. A bold, creamy orange pepper sauce paired with noodles, veggies, and juicy chicken breasts. The noodles had a nutty, almost peanut-sauce vibe that was completely addictive. The dish was so filling we had to take a bit home—but it tasted just as good the next day.

And then came dessert. First up, a massive slice of carrot cake crowned with milk and white chocolate shavings. It was a unique twist on the classic—still delicious. But the real star? Their Strawberry Cheesecake. It came plated beautifully with strawberries, whipped cream, and Whispers for that extra crunch. Silky smooth and bursting with flavour.

Throughout the evening, the service was nothing short of spectacular. Bhekumuzi was not only helpful but super enthusiastic about every dish. Manager Ilia checked in with us regularly, making sure we were comfortable and well taken care of.

The crowd was a mix of couples, friends, and families—adults mostly—and the whole atmosphere had this chic, laid-back vibe. Perfect for a night out, whether it’s a date, a catch-up with the girls, or even a solo escape.

Naturally, I took a ton of pics. The glowing stairway sign made for the perfect Instagram moment, and while I didn’t get to hop on the cute swing outside (too cold and already occupied), I’m saving that for next time.

Sharing this moment with my best friend made it even better. Between the laughs, amazing food, and warm service, it’s a night I’ll definitely remember. And those crumbed mushrooms? Still living rent-free in my mind.

Would I recommend Alta Gracia? 1000%. If you’re after good vibes, bold flavours, and a top-tier dining experience, this is the spot. And yes—I’m already planning my return. Next time, I’m eyeing their Raani Butter Chicken. Stay tuned for that one.
